Arshavin to wear number 23 shirt for Gunners

By Martin Caparrotta
The Andrei Arshavin saga finally over!

Arshavin claims he has been given squad number 23 by Arsenal

Arsenal have finally put an end to one of the most tedious transfer sagas in history by wrapping up a move for Russian playmaker Andrei Arshavin from Zenit St. Petersburg for around £10-12 million.

The deal is expected to be confirmed officially later today after the neccessary paperwork was faxed to the Premier League yesterday evening in time for the 5pm deadline.

The transfer, (for reasons not yet known), couldn’t be processed last night, but it appears that Arshavin passed a medical at Arsenal yesterday, and will wear the number 23 shirt.

Arshavin’s Official website has an update from yesterday with a response about the move to north London. It quotes Arshavin as saying:

“The negotiations [have] come to a close, the details [will be released] tomorrow. Now I can say only one thing – if I play for Arsenal, then [I will be] number 23.”

So Arshavin has been handed the number 23 shirt by the Gunners – the number made vacant by Sol Campbell’s move to Portsmouth three years ago.

As the 5pm Monday transfer deadline approached, hundreds of stories were published – many of which contradicted each other – so it will come as a big relief for Arsenal fans that a deal has finally been struck for the 27-year-old. He has agreed a £70,000-a-week, three-and-a-half year contract at The Emirates.

The Arshavin saga has been going on for weeks, if not months. The image below, a screenshot taken from a news syndication website, demonstrates how confusing last night and indeed the whole transfer window has been for Arsenal fans, with the same sources continuously publishing contradicting stories one after the other:

The Andrei Arshavin saga finally over!

But it would seem that Arsenal have finally landed their man after weeks of speculation – and it’s news that will be welcomed by Arsenal fans. An official statement is expected later today.

Sorry Ken, but I disagree with the thought of giving him the number 10 jersey. That was made a great number by one of the Arsenal greats, Bergkamp. His creative ability and overall personality and play are what made ’10′ a great jersey. I say stay with Gallas, he isnt creative like Bergkamp, so we still see the 10 as Bergkamp. It would be hard to see 10 on another creative player. Id rather see the number retired out of respect to the man himself in all honesty.

an insult to the number 10, Gallas. PTUI! arrogant pompous prick of a defender that somehow hanker after the universal number of the playmaker. AND WE ALLOWED HIM TO! Wenger has no respect.

I want the No. 10 on Theo Walcott’s back. Then get King Henry back to wear his legendary No. 14. Get rid of Gallas, a.s.a.p.

Cheers :)

@ Ken

I would give the 2 shirt to Sagna (traditionally 2 is the right back shirt) and the 3 to Clichy (again traditionally the left back shirt AND Gael is a much better left back than Ca$hley Cole)

Diaby should be given the 23. I think given a proper run in the team in his preferred central role he could be a great pairing with Cesc.

Hmm, Adebayor still ok.. but Eboue, Bendtner, Diaby, Denilson and Song aren’t good enough for team like Arsenal.

you guys be serious! with Nasri on the ball too long, the one making the play is Denilson. and Eboue is improving (save for his injuries). but you’re right on Ade and Diaby. they suck.

Actually Eboue,Adebayor,Song,Gallas are useless in ARSENAL and they should be sold and if WENGER wants Arsenal to perform then he should stop tribalism.

Can you imagine that WENGER likes a useless player like Adebayor but the guy cannot tackle even one player of his opponent and yet he calls himself a striker

BON,,in the first place am happy with yo comments but to be honest, des guys are nt hopeless its only dat, things are hard ,all dat is needed is to hav faith in our players and they shud learn to hav that eagerness/thirst of playing/winning and actually knowing what they want @ the end of the season like man u & liverpool player`s have.De only player i feel does nt fit in the team is berndtner.

Why not NO.13 For arshavin? He is attacking midfielder. I think 13 is perfect for him.Fabregas is the only one who deserves NO.10 Jersey.

f*cking arsenal fans are a joke so quick 2 jump on the bandwagon, i agree that eboue is not a right sided midfielder and seems 2 break up the flow of the team a lot and get out of position, but denilson has been brilliant this year, his positional play is superb but u fickle fans dnt notice that do u? he may give the ball away now and then, but he is a super little player! you guys done the same with flamini i recall, remember people saying he is not good enough in his first 2 seasons and we should get rid, but wenger kept faith and look at what a good player he become! denilson in his first full season has been better than flamini and at 20 years will be better than him!

diaby is a fantastic player who is improving, he has hardly played CM for arsenal but he has been excellent in the last couple of games and as much as u guys dont rate bendtner he was ok against west ham. Problem with you so called Arsenal fans is you listen to much 2 what u hear in the media, traditionally known for jumping on the bandwagon! you should all be ashamed of yourself and recognise that we still have a good side that is just underperforming this season!

we are missing something i am the first to admit it but some of u guys are ridiculous when u draw up dream teams and stuff! we could buy 10 new players and still not win the league! look at spurs!!

luv you all [ericco a student of plapoly jos camp].

All the players criticised above have had very good games for us this season. Take the West Ham game on Saturday: Bendtner was, surprisingly, superb when he went to the right wing. Eboue was having a great game up till his injury, looking the most likely to make something happen up front. Kolo and Gallas looked like a good centre back partnership again.

What people have to realise is that we’re having to play a fair few players at the moment who aren’t first choice. You can’t expect everyone in the squad to be world class. But NONE of them are “rubbish”.

We have however just added a world class player, and that can only be a good thing. He will at the very least provide decent cover for Cesc, Sammi, and Tom.

As for the shirt numbers, the fact that people purporting to be Arsenal fans give any kind of a toss about that just beggars belief. When it comes to shirts, all that matters is the re with white sleeves, the name on the back, and the badge on the front.
