Robbie Keane returns to Spurs

After a hectic day of transfer activity, the biggest story of the day is Robbie Keane’s return to his old club, Tottenham Hotspur, for a fee rumoured to be in the region of £15m.

It’s a move that will have pleased all parties concerned. Tottenham are suffering from an injury crisis. The signing of Keane will be a timely boost for both club and fans.

Liverpool fans will be left disappointed with the Irishman’s contribution. In 25 appearances he only managed 7 goals. Albeit, Rafa Benitez didn’t give Keane a prolonged run in the team.

In the last few weeks, Benitez has even resorted to leaving him out of the match day squad. An expensive asset to leave in the stands against Chelsea at £20m.

Keane a boyhood Liverpool fan, will be disappointed with how his time at Anfield turned out. He would have envisaged spending more than a measly 5 months at his beloved ‘Reds’.

But at the age of 28, and not getting in the first team, Keane will be happy to be playing regular first team football again. Ireland’s manager, Giovanni Trapattoni will also be pleased.

However it remains to be seen how Spurs fans will react to his return. In the summer when his £20m move went through, he admitted that he was eagerly anticipating playing for a ‘bigger’ club. Will he now admit he is returning to a ‘smaller’ club?

In other news related to Liverpool, rumours are circulating that David Villa of Valencia is poised to move to Merseyside. It will be a welcome boast for Liverpool. With the sale of Keane, their options up front now look limited: Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt and David N’Gog.

Unless Rafa Benitez plans to recall Andriy Voornin from Germany?
