Defoe: Injury was a blessing in disguise

Defoe has scored five League goals for Spurs already this season

Jermain Defoe believes that his spell on the sidelines at the beginning of the year has contributed to the fine form the striker has been in of late.

The 26-year-old told Hotspur Magazine that the timing of the injury may have been a blessing in disguise, allowing him to be at the top of his game for the new season.

Defoe was sidelined for a significant part of last season after sustaining a broken foot during a training session.

“I look back now on my broken metatarsal and actually think it was one of the best things that could have happened,” the striker told Hotspur Magazine.

“It meant I missed out just when I wanted to play most, and we were still in the middle of a relegation battle, but in the long term that rest I had was invaluable.

“Over the years I’ve always been lucky with injuries which means I’ve been used to playing pretty consistently throughout the season.

“I feel that extra month or so made all the difference and I think that’s the reason I’m now producing the form of my life.”
