Ronaldo, Drogba, Messi in Ballon d’Or shortlist

The shortlist of the ten nominees still in with a chance of scooping the 2009 Ballon d’Or award have been announced today.

The list, revealed in France Football magazine, includes the likes of Didier Drogba, Cristiano Ronaldo and Steven Gerrard.

But Argentina and Barcelona star Lionel Messi is the heavy favourite to win the award, with the ceremony taking place on Tuesday December 1.

2008 Ballon d’Or winner and World Footballer of the Year, Cristiano Ronaldo, will prove Messi’s closest competitor.

The Portuguese superstar played a significant part in retaining Manchester United’s Premier League title for a third successive season during 2008-09, and the world-record signing has been in unstoppable form for Real Madrid this term – scoring nine goals from just seven games in all competitions – until being forced out through injury in recent weeks.

The full list is as follows:

  • Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast, Chelsea)
  • Samuel Eto’o (Cameroon, FC Barcelona and Inter Milan)
  • Steven Gerrard (England, Liverpool)
  • Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Sweden, Inter Milan and FC Barcelona)
  • Andres Iniesta (Spain, FC Barcelona)
  • Kaka (Brazil, Milan AC and Real Madrid)
  • Lionel Messi (Argentina, FC Barcelona)
  • Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal, Manchester United and Real Madrid)
  • Wayne Rooney (England, Manchester United)
  • Xavi (Spain, FC Barcelona)

Just seeing your shortlist of the 10 players of the year and i have to say i am utterly disgusted.

I am a Chelsea fan and am not complaining because of the fact that only Drogba has been named, but I feel that both Rooney and Gerrard do NOT deserve to be in this list. Rooney had a season totally overshadowed by Ronaldo, and please tell me the last time Gerrard did something that outstanding??? I think someone needs to review this list

Utter nonsense. Steven Gerrard was the best player in the league last year. The fact Ryan Giggs won the PFA Player of the Year was a travesty. Gerrard’s form last season was recognised by the writers who gave him his deserved player of the year award. Most pundits would accept he was the best player in the league. Admittedly this season he has done nothing but in his defence has been injured a lot.

Gerrard doesn’t deserve to win this award but he certainly deserves to be on the list more so than any Chelsea player. Arguably more so than any Manchester United player.

I am sure if Chelsea continue their fine form this season they will have more representatives on this list next year: Drogba, Anelka, Terry…..

CR is the best anytime. He took the challage to spain where the world could settle above others. His few days in spain before his injury and real present record without him show his super commard.

Ronaldo does not deserve to be near the top 5. He was crap last year.

Messi, Iniesta, Xavi, Gerrard, Eto’o for the top 5.
