Five of the best: Ryan Giggs moments

In the modern era footballers have grown accustomed to making the tabloid headlines — and not always for their achievements on the pitch. But Ryan Giggs has conducted himself in exemplary fashion throughout his 20 years at Manchester United.

He was crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2009 on Sunday and it was fitting reward for the Premier League legend. The Sport Review pays special tribute to Giggs as we look back at five of his best moments.

1. Wonder goal v Arsenal (April 1999):
When Giggs finally calls time on a decorated career, this superb solo goal will be the most memorable moment. He skipped past four defenders before slamming his shot past David Seaman.

2. Manchester United v Chelsea (May 2008):
Giggs secured his second Champions League success in Moscow in 2008. It capped the perfect night as he scored a penalty in the shootout and broke Sir Bobby Charlton’s club appearance record.

3. Wigan Athletic v Manchester United (May 2008):
On the day he equalled Charlton’s record, Giggs emerged from the bench to score the second goal of the game which secured United’s tenth title  success in the Premier League.

4. Manchester United v Everton (March 1991):
The Welshman replaced Brian McClair in Manchester United’s top flight defeat to Everton. The Welshman was a virtual unknown but it marked the start of a glorious career at Old Trafford.

5. Manchester United v Juventus (October 1997):
Over the years, Ryan Giggs has been fond of scoring goals against the ‘Old Lady’. He netted an important equaliser against Juve in the 1999 semi-final first-leg and in 2003, he scored an impressive brace at the Stadio Olimpico. But his pick of the goals against Juventus was his stunning strike in the 1997 home tie.
