ESPN are confident that 3D technology will become a broadcasting standard over the next decade and believe that showing 25 World Cup clashes over the summer is the perfect opportunity to introduce the new technology to consumers. The 3D matches will be made available to ESPN’s US subscribers and it has not yet been made clear whether the broadcaster will offer the same service to its UK customers.
Broadcast industry experts believe that 3D television is the next step in broadcasting following the introduction of high definition transmissions.
The news comes after British broadcaster BSkyB announced last year that it would be launching the UK’s first 3D-TV channel during 2010.
The tried and tested technology will however require viewers to pay at least $2,000 to upgrade their existing television sets and invest in a ‘3D-TV’. In order to then view the picture in 3D, users will be required to wear polarising glasses similar to the type used in popular 3D cinemas.
BSkyB has recently performed vigorous testing of the technology in preparation for what it regards to be the “next stage” of their innovation plan.

The technology, which has seen a recent rise in popularity in film production, is under constant development and there are even plans to create a 3D-TV set that doesn’t require the user to wear glasses.
