Friday’s Forgotten Footballer: Ibrahim Ba

By Thomas Crean

Ibrahim Ba
Full Name: Ibrahim Ba
Position: Right-sided Midfielder
Nationality: French (8 caps, 2 goals)
Clubs: Le Harve, Bordeaux, Milan, Perugia, Marseille, Bolton, Çaykur Rizespor, Djurgården.

Ibrahim Ba is an unfortunate example of where it can all go wrong a promising starlet with the world at their feet.

He was once one of the hottest properties in world football, but he failed to live up to his early promise.

Ba began his career at Le Harve before moving on to Bordeaux, where he reached the Coupe de la Ligue final and made his international debut in his only season there.

Following a highly successful season, the Frenchman transferred to AC Milan despite strong interest for a host of Europe’s elite clubs.

His finest season in Italy was arguably his first, where he performed impressively in 31 appearances. This season included a memorable international moment against Brazil in a friendly, where his swerving free kick forced the opposition goalkeeper to spill the ball, allowing Marc Keller to score.

Unfortunately, Ibrahim Ba’s career started to go downhill when he was left out of France’s 1998 World Cup-winning squad.

He went on to have a torrid time at Milan; moving to both Perugia and Marseille on loan spells over the next few years.

Bolton snapped up Ba in 2003 from Milan, where he failed to make an impression. Later moves to Çaykur Rizespor and Djurgården failed to ignite any form like that of his heyday.

After regaining his fitness at lowly Italian side Varese, he signed a one-year contract with Milan which only offered him a sole cup appearance all season.

He then retired and was appointed as a scout covering Africa for AC Milan.
