Inter Milan target Steven Gerrard  Report

Jose Mourinho has made Steven Gerrard his top transfer target for next summer according to reports in the Italian media.
The Milan club aim to capitalise on the stricken finances and the overwhelming uncertainty at the Anfield club.
Mourinho has been a long-term admirer of the England international and the Portuguese manager attempted to prise Gerrard from Liverpool in the summer of 2004 and came even closer in 2005 before the 29-year-old finally spurned the advances of Chelsea.
Liverpool have endured a torrid season and currently lie in eighth place, four points off the top four. To add to the club’s woes, Gerrard has suffered from inconsistency and injuries.
The midfielder is an Anfield icon, but should the five-time European champions fail to qualify for the Champions League then it is conceivable that the captain would reconsider his options.
The Nerazzuri have dominated Serie A in recent years winning four successive Scudettos and look on course for a fifth, but success in Europe’s premier competition still evades them.
In order to rectify this current blemish in their recent history, Mourinho believes Gerrard can help propel them to Euro glory. According to the Corriere dello Sport, the owners would be prepared to offer a bid in the region of €34 million.
The same Italian paper broke the story last summer when Inter tried to secure the England international’s signature for £40 million. That attempt failed however, with Gerrard enjoying a superb season and Liverpool finishing with an all-time high total of points in the Premier League.
A source close to Inter Milan believes there is a possibility that Gerrard may be tempted to leave this summer after the horrendous season his club have experienced.
“Inter are working to sign Steven Gerrard given that Liverpool are in economic difficulty,” said the Inter source.
Inter Milan currently lie top of Serie A and hold a nine-point lead over city rivals AC Milan.
Controversial I know but Gerrard is 30 in May so his potential transfer fee is only going one direction. If Inter want to pay £35m then snap their hands off.
Gerrard has been extremely disappointing this season. In times of need on the pitch it is up to the captain to inspire his team mates, and lead by example. The job of captain goes beyond calling sides at the coin toss!
Perhaps it is now time to cash in on our legendary captain?
A very worthy point. It would be controversial and I can imagine many Liverpool fans wouldn’t like the idea of selling the captain. If Inter were to pay crazy money for him then maybe the powers that be at Anfield would consider selling. I’m sure if Rafa Benitez was still in charge he would want assurances he will be allowed to reinvest the funds.
I think £35 million for a 30 year old player who continually sulks and has had a lot of injuries in recent injuries is a great piece of business. Liverpool need the money and a new captain who is more vocal and who doesn’t think they are bigger than the club. At the moment Gerrard is part of the problem, selling him would be a step in the right direction. He has been a fantastic servant and will always be a legend at LFC but it is time he moved on to pastures new as all great players eventually have to do.
