Togo have been punished by the Confederation of African Football following their decision to pull out of this year’s Africa Cup of Nations because of a terrorist attack on their team bus.

The national side will not feature at the next two tournaments, scheduled for 2012 and 2014, due to their decision to pull out of this year’s competition.

The horrific attack in which three people were killed, including the bus driver, shook the sporting world and the visibly distressed players opted to pull out of the competition and return home.

But it appears to have been a costly decision as the CAF announced the ban, stating that their decision not to play was forced by “governmental interference”.

Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor, who was one of the players on the bus, only returned to training in Manchester earlier this week after being granted compassionate leave by the Premier League club.

The final of the competition between Egypt and Ghana, held in Angola, will take place tomorrow.

The feeling in a band of people is that the banishment of Togo from the next two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is unfair because at least CAF should have taken action that does not punish some youngsters in Togo who would have show cased their talents in these coming games. CAF should have at least punished the goverment by fining the Football association in Togo. We needed to see up coming Adebayors in Togo and they needed to get the eyes of European scouts as early as 2012 or 2014. The feeling is that the ban can kill the movement of talent from Togo to Asia or Europe because most scouts are at the AFCON stage to pick talent. Just look at all the talent that was discovered at this AFCON. The likes of Geho from Egypt would have never been known if he did not show case his talents in Angola. I symphathise with the young boys of Togo who have been punished because their seniors did not attend the games in Angola.
