Tom Hicks promises Liverpool will ‘spend big’

Yesterday it was announced Tom Hicks Jr, son of co-owner Tom Hicks, had resigned from the board after sending an obscene email to a Liverpool fan.

A member of a group of Liverpool fans called ‘The Spirit of Shankly’ had sent Hicks Jr an email, looking to discuss the current financial plight of the club.

One of the group’s main agendas is to successfully drive Tom Hicks Sr and George Gillett from the football club.

In his less than courteous reply to the Liverpool fan, Hicks Jr allegedly used the words “Blow me, f*** face” as his emotions seemingly boiled over after months of increased pressure from the fan group.

The Spirit of Shankly immediately rendered the position of the Liverpool director as untenable and called for his resignation. It is believed that Hicks Jr offered to step down from the board as soon as the controversy broke.

In his statement on Monday, he said: “I have great respect for Liverpool Football Club, especially the Club’s supporters. I apologise for my mistake and I am very sorry for my harmful words. I do not want my actions to take away from the Club’s future; therefore I am resigning from the Board. To the fans and to the Club, please accept my sincerest apologies.”

It has prompted a reshuffle of the members of the Liverpool board. His place has been taken by Casey Coffman, vice-president of Hicks Holdings. In addition, the club’s chief financial officer Philip Nash and commercial director Ian Ayre, have both been appointed as directors on the board.

Meanwhile in response to another email from a Liverpool fan, Tom Hicks Sr spoke in bullish mood.

He was quick to point out that the debt looming over the club is ‘very manageable’ in comparison to Manchester United. He also insisted that player sales had never been used to ‘service debt’.

Furthermore he promised heavy investment in the squad during the summer transfer window. He described the January transfer window as a ‘very poor quality market’.

Finally he added that Liverpool’s new stadium would be the ‘game changer’.

It is unlikely these promises will quench the thirst of the Liverpool supporter groups, who are unwilling to rest until there is a change in the hierarchy at the club.
