Hull City appoint Iain Dowie as Phil Brown’s replacement

Iain Dowie was today confirmed as the new manager of struggling Hull City after the ex-Northern Ireland international penned a short-term contract with the Tigers.

The appointment was announced on the club’s website on Wednesday morning. An official statement read: “Hull City AFC is delighted to confirm Iain Dowie as the Club’s new manager, initially on a short-term contract.”

He will be assisted by Steve Wigley, who previously managed Southampton for a brief spell, and former Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Tim Flowers.

The 45-year-old insists he is looking forward to taking on the difficult task ahead of him at the KC Stadium, with Hull currently lagging in 19th place. Despite residing in the relegation zone, three points from safety, Dowie can’t wait to get stuck in.

Speaking to the media today he said: “It’s a big challenge and I can’t wait to get out onto the training ground with the players on Thursday.”

He also spoke of his intention to introduce an attractive style of play to the team.

“I want us to play open, attractive football,” he continued.

“When we’re in possession we need to be a bit more creative,” he added. “The tenacity and desire they showed against Arsenal will be absolutely paramount.”

Hull chairman Adam Pearson said that he expects his new man to be a success, and that he is already anticipating sitting down with him to extend his stay come the end of the season.

“I’m expecting Iain to make a difference here,” said Pearson. “I’m expecting him to keep us in the Premier League and I’m expecting to sit down with him and sort out a full time contract on May 15th.”

Dowie has been brought in as a swift replacement for Phil Brown, who was relieved to ‘gardening duties’ on Monday. He has previously managed Oldham, Crystal Palace, Charlton, Coventry and Queens Park Rangers.

In 2005 he failed to keep Crystal Palace in the Premier League after the London club were relegated on the final day of the season.
