Once again the man in the middle is left to carry the can. How many times in a season does a player mess up a simple pass, lose control of the ball, fluff a chance when clean through etc.......? Many times.
So, how many times in a season does an incorrect decision actually affect the result of a match? How many times per season in reality does a decision actually be proved beyond doubt as incorrect? Not so many times.
Top referees earn OK money, about £1K per week. Compared to even average players, this is not very much.
Part of the attraction of football at the level at which I officiate, is that we play under the same 17 laws as the guys on the telly earning their millions and blaming everyone but themselves for missed opportunities.
We get one look at an incident from one angle and the vast majority of the time get it absolutely correct.
7000 referees per year leave the game, is it any wonder with the complete lack of respect shown to them by players, "supporters", the media, managers, parents, etc, etc.
The current standard of refereeing is excellent, with more feedback, assessments and training programmes than ever before. Referees now have to be athletes, like the players.
Perhaps if the players, fans and indeed the media actually understood the laws of the game, it would help!!
