Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney is the early favourite to win the 2010 PFA Player of the Year award after this year’s four nominees were announced on Thursday.
Rooney will face competition from Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas and Manchester City forward Carlos Tevez.
The England striker is the heavy favourite to land the award following a prolific season so far for Manchester United in which the 24-year-old netted 34 goals in 41 appearances - an average rate of 0.8 goals per game.
Should Rooney scoop the award he would become the fourth Manchester United player to win the title in as many seasons, following on from Cristiano Ronaldo in 2007 and 2008 and Ryan Giggs last year.
Both Fabregas and Rooney have picked up the PFA Young Player of the Year award in recent seasons and Didier Drogba will be looking to become only the second-ever Chelsea player to win the award after John Terry’s success in 2006.
Drogba has scored 32 goals for The Blues this season, while Carlos Tevez has notched up 28 strikes for Manchester City.
Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas managed 19 goals and as many assists for the Gunners before he fractured his leg against Barcelona in the Champions League a fortnight ago, effectively ending his season.
The awards ceremony will take place at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on April 25.
