Schiavone win symbolised my Italy, says Marcello Lippi

Marcello Lippi has called on his Italy side to emulate the “passion” and “determination” of newly-crowned French Open winner Francesca Schiavone.

Schiavone, 29, became the first Italian woman to win a Grand Slam title after beating Australia’s Sam Stosur in the final at Roland Garros last Saturday.

Italy’s head coach paid tribute to the Milanese tennis player’s performance.

“On Saturday afternoon, in the room in Geneva, I was glued to the TV to watch from the first to last point the final won by Francesca Schiavone,” revealed Lippi.

Lippi, 62, said he was inspired by the tenacious Schiavone, who displayed shrewd tactics and unrelenting energy throughout her campaign in Paris.

The veteran manager spoke of his admiration for Schiavone and highlighted the attributes which he believes exemplifies the Italian nation.

“Her performance was symbolic of my Italy: passion, determination, class and heart.”
