Sidebottom replaces injured Bresnan ahead of Tigers test

Ryan Sidebottom has replaced Tim Bresnan in England’s squad for this week’s second test against Bangladesh.

Bresnan, who picked up four wickets as England saw off the Tigers by eight wickets at Lord’s yesterday, has a stress fracture in his foot.

It comes as a blow to the Yorkshire all-rounder who was looking for another opportunity to stake a claim for an Ashes birth later in the year.

Sidebottom is included ahead of Nottinghamshire teammate Stuart Broad who is once again rested.

Bresnan’s absence weakens England’s batting options with the selectors now set to make a straight choice between Sidebottom and Lord’s 12th man Ajmal Shahzad.

Uncapped Shahzad, 24, toured Bangladesh earlier in the year but was passed in the pecking order by Lord’s man of the match Steve Finn.

32-year-old Sidebottom has played 22 Tests and was ever present during England’s World T20 win in the Caribbean last month.

Injuries have damaged his Test prospects but many observers questioned his selection for the final Test in South Africa last winter.
