David James signs one-year contract with Bristol City

David James has joined Bristol City after signing a one-year deal with the Championship club.

The 12-month contract also gives him the option to stay at Ashton Gate for a further year at the end of the upcoming season.

The 39-year-old has been subject to much interest after Portsmouth’s relegation, but James maintains he has joined the ‘right club.’

“I’ve had offers to stay in the Premier League but it is more important that I play football for the right club and be a family man,” he told BBC Sport.

And talks with City’s chairman Steve Lansdown further helped persuade the veteran goalkeeper.

“I had a long conversation with the chairman, Steve Lansdown, yesterday and I liked what he said about the club and his ambition,” he added.

James, who has played for his country 53 times, will be unveiled to the Ashton Gate faithful on Saturday before a pre-season friendly against Blackpool.
