It has been speculated for some time that the current Argentina captain would head for an Anfield exit after a disappointing season on Merseyside and comments made by Walter Tamer, Mascherano’s agent, suggest the player would like a move to Inter Milan.
“After the World Cup, he has switched off but it’s clear that he is happy to be a target of top clubs in the transfer market,” said Tamer.
“Last season, it was the European champions Barcelona that wanted him and this year it’s Inter, the current Champions League winners.
“For him to be linked to Inter has a magical taste. It’s a dream.
“Think about it, the strongest team in the world wants him, a team where many of Mascherano’s compatriots play and a side that is guided by a coach with whom Mascherano has a personal bond.”
Reports have suggested that former Liverpool manager Rafael BenÃÂtez has made the 26-year-old one of his main targets this summer after taking the helm at the San Siro.
But the Spanish boss will have to fight off interest from Barcelona in order to sign the former West Ham midfielder, who has made 93 league appearances for the Reds since his arrival in 2007.
Meanwhile Liverpool have been quick to play down the concerns surrounding Fernando Torres’ fitness after the striker picked up an injury during the World Cup final on Sunday.
Club doctor Peter Bruckner said he did not feel the Spaniard groin injury was “too serious,” but is still awaiting the results of a scan before further assessing how much of an impact the injury may have on the Spanish front man’s chances of starting the new season.
One positive for Liverpool supporters is that Torres’ injury has forced Chelsea to step back from making a bid for the World Cup winning striker until concerns over his fitness are eased, potentially leading to the Blues looking elsewhere in order to bolster their attacking line-up.
