Former Arsenal winger José Antonio Reyes was named man of the match as Atlético Madrid overcame Inter Milan to win a UEFA Super Cup title at the first time of asking.

Reyes opened the scoring for Los Rojiblancos in the 62nd minute when his persevering charge towards Julio Cesar’s goal afforded him the time and space to slot a low effort past the Brazilian stopper. Poor defending, clinical finish.

Sergio Aguero then doubled the La Liga side’s lead when Simão’s tantalising low pass across the six-yard box left the Argentine striker with a simple tap-in.

Rafael Benítez’s Inter were handed some late hope after Raúl García brought down Goran Pandeev in the penalty area, but newly-crowned European Player of the Year Diego Milito missed the resulting spot-kick and the chance to set up a tense ending. The Europa League holders held on to seal another UEFA title.

The clash was a tactical affair, with both sides taking time to settle into a first half that lacked major incident. The second period was livelier, but ultimately Atlético contained Benítez’s cautious team with an efficiency that will worry the Spanish coach – the Serie A champions only managing to muster up two shots on target despite edging the possession.

All in all, it was a night to remember for the Atlético fans, who deserve credit for bringing the stadium to life when matters on the pitch were less inspiring – and it was a case of ‘job done’ according to ex-Gunner Reyes.

“We played extremely well and as a team we did what we set out to do,” said Reyes. “It was a hard match but we played at our best.

“It was a tremendous feeling scoring the goal – all players dream about that. I am very pleased, not only about the goal but the match as a whole and the team’s performance.”

Atlético coach Quique Sanchez Flores added: “This brings great joy to our fans and I must say we played very well and deserved to win. I was very satisfied.”
