Liverpool are set to sign goalkeeper Brad Jones from Championship side Middlesbrough for a fee of £2.5 million.

Jones passed a medical at Melwood yesterday and later agreed personal terms with the club. However the deal has been held up following a disagreement over how the fee should be paid.

Since the moving to the Riverside Stadium in 2001 the 28-year-old has made 76 appearances for Middlesbrough. His consistent club form last season led to international selection with Australia and Jones is currently deputy to Mark Schwarzer.

Jones, however, did not participate at the World Cup after his son was diagnosed with leukaemia.

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson is keen to recruit English talent in the wake of the new regulations implemented this season. Jones would qualify as a ‘home-grown’ player under the new rules and thus makes for a suitable back-up option for first choice goalkeeper Pepe Reina.
