Tottenham Hotspur must beat Swiss side Young Boys if they are to qualify for the Champions League group stage.

Harry Redknapp’s side will travel to Switzerland on 17/18 August for the first leg against the 11-time Super League champions. The return match will take place on 24/25 August at White Hart Lane.

Young Boys proved their credentials as a Champions League side with an impressive 1-0 victory against Fenerbahce in Turkey to ensure their progression into the play-off stage with an aggregate 3-2 win.

The Bern-based side previously reached the semi-finals of the European Cup in 1959, where they were defeated by 1-3 by Stade Reims. Spurs have won the UEFA Cup on two occasions in 1972 and 1984 under Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw respectively.

Darren Earles, the north London club’s secretary, was in positive mood following the draw.

“We know it is going to be a tough game but we are excited about it and looking forward to getting into the group stages,” said Earles.

He added: “Playing at home in the second leg is always an advantage.”
