France playmaker Yoann Gourcuff is set to join Olympique Lyon from Bordeaux after the two clubs agreed on a €22m fee for the highly-rated 24-year-old.

The skilful midfielder will sign a long-term contract with his new Ligue 1 club when he passes a medical this week, Lyon confirmed on Monday. The initial fee of €22m could rise by a further €4.5m should Lyon sell the Ploemeur-born player to another club.

“Lyon welcome the arrival of Yoann Gourcuff, who was the main target of coach Claude Puel and will give the team a new dimension in midfield,” read a statement made by Lyon.

Gourcuff, who has won 22 caps for France, was voted Ligue 1 Player of the Year in 2009. He made 94 appearances during his two-year spell with Bordeaux after joining from AC Milan.

Touted as France’s next Zinedine Zidane, Gourcuff had attracted interest from the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal, but disappointed at the World Cup in South Africa.
