Manchester United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been appointed manager of Norwegian side Molde.

The former Red Devils’ striker, who has been the head coach of United’s reserves since 2008, originally moved to Old Trafford from Molde in 1996 following a 31-goal haul in Norway’s top division.

Solskjaer made 366 appearances and racked up 126 goals for United winning six Premier League titles, enjoying two FA Cup successes and famously scoring the winner against Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions League final.

Solskjaer retired from professional football in 2007 following a reoccurring knee injury and Ferguson handed the former Norway international the role of manager of United’s reserve side.

And Ferguson was quick to pay tribute to Solskjaer’s contributions to United over the last decade.

“He has been a fantastic servant to us and I am sure he will do well,” said Ferguson.

The 68-year-old also believes Molde will provide the perfect platform for Solskjaer to launch a successful career in football management.

“Molde is a very progressive club in Norwegian football, so this is a good start for him,” the United manager remarked.

“He has worked with some really good young players in our reserve team and has contributed to their development.

The United boss added: “Once he gets experience of managing a club in its own right who knows where it will take him?”
