Tiger Woods insists he is close to being back to his best

Tiger Woods has sounded a warning to the rest of the golfing world by claiming he has rediscovered the touch that brought him years of dominance in the sport.

Woods had to settle for second place at the Chevron World Challenge on Sunday after he squandered a four-shot lead before being beaten by Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell, but the American showed enough to suggest he is on his way to rediscovering his top form.

“It was a great week, even though I didn’t win,” said Woods, who lost his number one ranking to England’s Lee Westwood last month.

“Even though I lost and made countless mistakes in the middle part of the round, it said a lot for me to come back and put my swing back together again.”

McDowell, who sunk a dramatic birdie at the 72nd hole to force a sudden-death play-off before making a similar putt at the same hole to win, admitted it is only a matter of time until Woods secures his next title.

“He used to appear invincible,” said McDowell, who is now up to a career-high ranking of seventh. “Of course, he’s made himself appear more human in the last 12 months.

“But there’s something a bit special about his golf game, and I fully expect that mystique to return as the golf clubs start doing the talking again.”
