World No1 Caroline Wozniacki eased into the third round of the French Open with a straight sets victory over Aleksandra Wozniak.

The top seed overcame her resilient Canadian opponent in straight sets 6-3 7-6 to set up a third-round tie with No28 seed Daniela Hantuchova.

The 20-year-old Dane comfortably took the first set and quashed a brief fightback from Wozniak in the second to see off her 162-ranked opponent in just under two hours.

Wozniacki admitted that she was fortunate to avoid a deciding third set. “It was a tough match,” she said. “I started off really well and everything was going the way I wanted it to.

“In the second set she played better and I started to play a little bit worse. Thankfully I finished it in two sets. It could easily have been three.”

Last year’s runner-up Sam Stosur highlighted her Grand Slam credentials as she crushed Romania’s Simona Halep 6-2 6-0 in just over an hour.

The 27-year-old eighth seed effortlessly disposed of the 2008 junior champion in Paris, hitting 21 winners and capitalising on Halep’s lacklustre first serve.

“I’ve got the type of game that I am capable of changing up the pace, hitting a bit more spin, hitting a bit flatter,” said Stosur afterwards.

“Maybe doing some other things that some other players don’t like to do and are a bit more one dimensional. I think I’ve got all these different attributes.”

Last year’s champion Francesca Schiavone progressed without difficulty as she effortlessly overcame Russia’s Vesna Dolonts 6-1 6-2.

Elsewhere, third seed Vera Zvonareva narrowly avoided an upset as battled back to defeat Germany’s Sabine Lisicki 4-6 7-5 7-5.

Three-time semi-finalist in Paris Jelena JankoviÄ”¡ reached round three with a straight sets win over Vera Dushevina, while American Bethanie Mattek-Sands overcame her compatriot Varvara Lepchenko in a three sets 6-3 2-6 6-3.
