Team GB boss Andy Hunt has admitted he would love to see David Beckham selected for next year’s London 2012 Olympics.

Beckham has long stated his desire to be one of the three “over-age” players in the 18-strong under-23 men’s team for next summer’s Games.

Stuart Pearce, the England under-21 coach revealed as Britain’s Olympic boss at Wembley this week, has batted away detailed speculation about his squad plans but is expected to name a ‘long list’ of those under consideration in the coming weeks, which is expected to feature 36-year old Beckham.

“Of course the selection comes solely down to Stuart and Stuart alone but personally I would love to see David out on the field,” Hunt told national press agency Sportsbeat.

“He is such a tremendous ambassador for Britain and football in particular, so to see him representing Team GB would be a fitting moment I think.

“The fans would absolutely love to see him involved in some way in this fantastic opportunity.”

Beckham, who was raised just a few miles from the London 2012 Olympic Park, has been a long-time supporter of the Games.

England’s most capped outfield player – who worked alongside Pearce on the England support staff at the 2010 World Cup – this week stated that being in the shop window for Olympic selection will be a key factor in deciding where he commits his future, with his £4.5m annual contract with MLS side LA Galaxy expiring next month.
