The Football Association will wait to receive clarification from Uefa over its reasons for Wayne Rooney’s three-game ban before choosing whether to appeal Thursday’s decision.
The England striker is set to miss all three group games at Euro 2012 as a result of the suspension handed to him after his sending off against Montenegro last week.
England manager Fabio Capello is now left pondering whether to take Rooney to Poland and Ukraine next summer in the hope that the Manchester United forward can make an impact should his side reach the quarter-finals of the tournament.
An FA statement read: “Further to Uefa’s decision to impose a three match suspension on Wayne Rooney following his sending off against Montenegro, The FA await the full reasons from the disciplinary committee, and will give full consideration to the decision internally, before deciding on any response to Uefa or making any further public comment.”
Should The FA decide to appeal the decision and lose, European football’s governing body could increase the length of the suspension to four games.
Uefa branded Rooney’s kick out at Montenegro defender Miodrag Dzudović during the 2-2 draw as “assault” in a statement released after the meeting of its disciplinary committee on Thursday.
It read: “Today’s decision was taken in relation to the red card shown to Rooney for assault after 74 minutes of England’s final Group G game, the 2-2 draw with Montenegro in Podgorica.
“The striker will now be suspended from playing in his country’s next three Uefa national competition matches for which he would be eligible.”
