The third and final leg of his comeback in the Fina World Cup series in Asia took him to Tokyo – Thorpe finishing a best of just seventh in the 100m medley from the previous two meets.
And it didn’t get any better as the five-time Olympic champion ranked 12th in the 100m freestyle, 26th in the 100m butterfly and pulled out of the 100m medley in Japan.
It wasn’t all doom and gloom though with Thorpe’s times of 53.59seconds in the 100m butterfly and 49.45 in the 100m freestyle both quicker than what he managed at the previous meet in Beijing.
And Thorpe, who is building towards the Australian Olympic trials in March, said: “The week has been challenging, but has been very good.
“I wish I could have done it with no-one watching but that’s unfortunately not the case. I am very comfortable with where I’m at.”
