André Villas-Boas upbeat over Chelsea’s chances of silverware
Chelsea boss André Villas-Boas keen to guide Blues to silverware during his first season in charge at Stamford Bridge
Andr̩ Villas-Boas remains hopeful he can guide Chelsea to a trophy in his first season in charge at Stamford Bridge Рbut accepts the Blues have fallen short of expectations in the Premier League.
The west Londoners currently reside in fourth place in the table, nine points behind leaders Manchester City – but the 34-year-old Portuguese manager chose to stress that his side are still competing for three trophies at his weekly news conference at Cobham on Thursday.
“[This season] has been a fantastic experience for the team in all senses and hopefully we can take the ship up to a good port, which is to win a couple of trophies.
“We are open to three competitions at the moment and we still have to try to improve things a little bit the the Premier League because it’s not up to our standards. In the cup competitions we have to wait and see because anything can happen.”
Villas-Boas also confirmed that Chelsea hope to complete the signing of Bolton Wanderers defender Gary Cahill soon after the clubs settled on a £7m fee earlier in the month.
“It’s unfair for me to put it in the public eye,” he continued. “It’s taking its time and should be concluded soon. That’s the information that I have from my chief executive. It should be concluded soon and hopefully we can reach an agreement.”
The Chelsea coach, whose side take on Sunderland at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, reserved praise for Premier League manager of the month Martin O’Neill after masterminding a remarkable turnaround at the Stadium of Light since taking charge in December.
“It’s a fantastic run of form for Sunderland,” he said. “I think Martin has had the right impact. He is one of the top managers in the game with tremendous success.
“What is a significant difference is that a team that was so low in motivation and self-belief have managed to get themselves together to beat the leaders and to go on a run of results that inspires everybody.”
Villas-Boas also confirmed that there has been a bid for defender Alex, who is a reported Queens Park Rangers target, from an unnamed Premier League side.
“There has been an approach from a Premier League club, so we have to listen to offers,” he said.
