Gareth Bale has been named in the Uefa.com users’ Team of the Year for 2011 after a sparkling 12 months with Tottenham Hotspur.

Bale, the only Premier League representative on the list, is the first Spurs player to ever appear in the fantasy XI and the Wales international is joined by the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola was picked as Europe’s top manager after guiding the Catalan giants to five trophies in 2011, including La Liga and Champions League successes to take his tally to 13 trophies from three-and-a-half years in charge at Camp Nou.

Spain midfielder Xavi was the player to receive the most individual votes and has said he will donate €100,000 cheque from Uefa to the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Goalkeeper Iker Casillas heads the Real Madrid contingent and, like club team-mate Ronaldo, appears in the side for the fifth year running.

Ronaldo, chosen alongside Messi as a forward in the dream team, previously figured as a right midfielder in past editions and his six appearances overall is a total matched only by Barcelona defender Carles Puyol.

By contrast, the third Madrid player picked, defender Marcelo, makes the cut for the first time.

Uefa.com users’ Team of the Year 2011:

Iker Casillas (Real Madrid); Daniel Alves (Barcelona), Gerard Piqué (Barcelona), Thiago Silva (AC Milan), Marcelo (Real Madrid); Arjen Robben (Bayern Munich), Xavi Hernández (Barcelona), Andrés Iniesta (Barcelona), Gareth Bale (Tottenham Hotspur); Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid). Manager: Pep Guardiola (Barcelona).

I guess this result begs the question. Who uses the uefa.com website. Spanish people perhaps?

Giggs, vidic and Rooney and van der sar should be in this, why dose Uefa bum spanish teams so much?

No not at all, I am British, I am a massive football fan and I support Spurs. I actually voted for Bale to be in this team and it all went on votes.
Clearly you can see that it is not just all Spanish players in this team, however the majority of it is. And that is only because of the fact that Barca and Real have some of the best players in the world. And also Barca being the most sucessfull team for the last few years. Are you telling me Rooney is better than Messi, certainly not in my opinion, therefore I think this team is quite accurate.
