Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to build on their Carling Cup success by winning the FA Cup and securing a place in the Champions League next season.

The 34-year-old came on as a second-half substitute for Daniel Agger during Liverpool’s cup final victory over Cardiff City at Wembley on Sunday.

And while Carragher was delighted the Reds ended their six-year wait for a trophy, he has been quick to set his sights on securing the FA Cup and finishing in the top four.

“We have achieved something but there are still two targets to go for, the top four and FA Cup,” he told Liverpool’s website.

“The top four has been made more difficult by other results this weekend. But we want to come back here again. We want to play in the semi-final and the final.

“We should be looking to get into Europe every year through our league position rather than through winning the Carling Cup.

“It’s great that we have qualified for the Europa League, of course it is, but we want to do that through our league position.

“The next step is trying to get back into the Champions League.”

Carragher is expected to fill in for the injured Agger when the Reds welcome Arsenal to Anfield on Saturday.

And the vice-captain, who played the full 90 minutes in Liverpool’s 2-0 victory at the Emirates last August, admitted it will be a difficult game against the Gunners.

“We know it is going to be a difficult task and obviously we have got a big game coming up against Arsenal this weekend. They will be flying after the win over Tottenham. But Europe is part of our heritage and we need to be involved again.”
