The new England manager should look no further than Steven Gerrard to captain the national side, according to Jamie Carragher.

John Terry was stripped of the armband for a second time after the Football Association said he could not be skipper while he is facing charges for allegedly racially abusing QPR’s Anton Ferdinand during a game back in October.

And following Fabio Capello’s subsequent resignation, England are now without a manager and a captain with four months to go until the European Championships in Poland and Ukraine.

But Carragher believes Liverpool skipper Gerrard, 31, is the obvious choice for the job after Rio Ferdinand said he did not want the armband.

“Steven Gerrard is the stand-out captain, and that’s not a biased verdict,” Carragher told Liverpool’s website.

“He’s been the captain of Liverpool for probably a decade. He’s captained in Champions League finals, Europe, big Premier League games.

“He’s also captained England in the last World Cup and he’s one of England’s best players. For me, I don’t think there’s a debate. It should be Steven Gerrard without a shadow of a doubt.”
