Stuart Lancaster has backed the Football Association’s decision to place Under-21 head coach Stuart Pearce in temporary charge of England.

FA chairman David Bernstein confirmed on Thursday that Pearce will take command of the national side for their friendly against the Netherlands on 29 February.

And Lancaster, who was appointed England rugby interim head coach in December, believes Pearce is perfectly placed to start the rejuvenation process following Fabio Capello’s shock resignation.

“I know Stuart pretty well. He came and spoke to the England Saxons last year and he rang me last week to wish me good luck for the Scotland game,” said Lancaster.

“For me, he’s the ideal person to step in because he understands the culture and the enviroment. When you understand the culture, you have a chance at shaping it.

“It’s obviously a pretty unique situation which English football is in at the moment. But I think he is exactly the right person to step into the role.

“The thing that will help him is that he understands the dynamics surrounding the role because he’s been working with the FA, and obviously he will be respected by the players.

“It is a complicated dynamic, but you have got to understand the problem before you try and solve it. And that was the advantage I had back in December when I was appointed interim head coach.

“It is important he brings his own views and own philosophy into solving the key problems, even if it is just for a one-game basis.

“Having someone like Stuart there, who has played for his country and represented his country with pride and passion, hopefully it will help the team in the short-term and actually prepare the team long-term for what is going to be a very important tournament in June.”
