Arsène Wenger claimed Arsenal have emerged from a difficult spell with a new-found confidence after watching his side battle to a narrow victory at Everton on Wednesday.

Thomas Vermaelen nodded home the eventual winner from a corner in the eighth minute to hand the Gunners their sixth straight Premier League victory and hoist the north Londoners up into third place – a point clear of Tottenham who could only draw at Stoke.

And Wenger, whose side did well to hold firm during spells of intense pressure from the home side, was thrilled to see his side emerge victorious from a gruelling encounter.

“It was a massive test because Everton had lost at Liverpool and they wanted to get something. They are a very good side,” said Wenger.

“I felt the attitude was always very good for the players and confidence comes from results. We’ve turned a few results around and that creates belief.

“When you look at the fixtures you know games when you could be in danger. But for us every game until the end of the season we need to be focused and I believe we have learned from a difficult period.”

Meanwhile, Everton boss David Moyes felt his side were hard done by after the Toffees saw Royston Drenthe’s goal wrongly ruled out for offside in the first half.

“Apart from the first 20 minutes I thought we did very well and matched Arsenal all the way. But a few decisions went against us,” he said.

“We’ve picked up some big scalps at Goodison lately and we came very close again.”
