Szczesny: I’d be really pleased to see Tottenham in Europa League

Wojciech Szczesny insists Arsenal will not settle for a fourth-place finish this term – and admits he would be “really pleased” to see Tottenham drop out of the Champions League places before the end of the season.

The Gunners, currently fourth in the league and four points behind Spurs in third, were knocked out of Europe’s elite club competition on Tuesday night following a valiant but ultimately fruitless display against AC Milan at the Emirates.

Arsenal will now look to extend their winning run to four games when they host Newcastle in the Premier League on Monday night – and the 21-year-old shot-stopper believes the Gunners’ recent run of good results will give them a boost in their bid for qualification for next season’s Champions League.

“We sent a message across to the teams in the Premier League that when we are at our very best we can beat anyone in the country and in Europe,” Szczesny told Sky Sports after Tuesday’s game.

“It will give us a lot of confidence. Yes, we are heartbroken because it wasn’t enough and we got knocked out of the Champions League but there are a lot of positives.

“I wouldn’t settle now for fourth place. We’re four points behind the other north London club and hopefully we can challenge them.

“Hopefully Chelsea can challenge them for a fourth spot as well. I’d be really pleased to see Tottenham in the Europa League next season.”
