Liverpool 0 West Brom 1: It was one of those days, admits Dalglish

Kenny Dalglish was left to rue Liverpool’s misfortune after the Reds hit the woodwork twice and had a penalty appeal turned down as West Bromich Albion secured a memorable victory at Anfield on Sunday.

The Reds were dominant against Roy Hodgson’s side in the first half, and they felt they should have had a penalty when Maxi Rodríguez was caught by Baggies defender Billy Jones inside Ben Foster’s area – but referee Neil Swarbrick failed to award the Reds a spot-kick.

After the interval, Liverpool came even closer as Jordan Henderson hit the crossbar, while Andy Carroll and Luis Suárez both missed good openings.

But the home side were made to pay for their wastefulness as Glen Johnson’s mistake saw the Reds defender give the ball away to Mulumbu, who played in Peter Odemwingie to shoot past Pepe Reina and secure West Brom’s first win at Anfield in 45 years.

“It’s not just been one of those days; it’s been like that seven or eight times here,” said Dalglish.

“After we won the Carling Cup, we came back and played Arsenal and we were brilliant. We got to the final last week after beating Everton and they came out today and were excellent again.

“It’s great credit to the players that they continued to go at the opposition and they made chance after chance. The woodwork, again, wasn’t our best friend.

“The players showed great resolve in the way they went about their work and because of that they made a lot of chances on goal but they just couldn’t get a break.

“There’s not much else that we can add to what we’ve said before so many times after a game at Anfield.”

Liverpool’s woes in front of goal have been much documented this season, and of course much lamented by Dalglish, and Sunday’s performance typified a frustrating Premier League campaign for the Reds.

In the second half, the home side should have opened the scoring with Suárez’s dazzling run past three opposition defenders resulting in the Uruguayan firing his effort over Foster’s crossbar.

Dirk Kuyt hit the inside of the post before Foster saved another Suárez effort, with Carroll falling over as he attempted to net from the rebound and Jay Spearing’s shot blocked by Chris Brunt on the line before Henderson ended the move with an erratic effort into the side-netting.

“They just need a bit of luck I think,” added Dalglish. “It sounds repetitive but it’s not an excuse.

“We’re not running away from something. It’s not as if there’s something drastically wrong. It is just a piece of good fortune that we need.

“I think you could go back over the old interviews and it’ll be the same thing.”
