Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard insists he has no regrets about turning down a potential move to Chelsea in 2005.

The 31-year-old appeared to be on the verge of moving to José Mourinho’s side in a £32m deal just five weeks after captaining Liverpool to Champions League glory with a 3-2 victory on penalties against AC Milan in Istanbul.

The England midfielder had informed the club of his desire to leave before reversing his decision a day later and signing a fresh four-year deal at Anfield.

Liverpool went on to win the FA Cup in 2006 and the Carling Cup in 2012, while Chelsea have won the Premier League twice, three FA Cups and one Carling Cup during that spell.

But Gerrard maintains he is happy with his choice and insisted his doubt around staying at the club centred on the financial benefits for the Reds from his possible sale.

“No [I don’t regret not joining Chelsea],” Gerrard told RTE‘s ‘The Late Late Show’.

“I’m a winner. I love playing football and I love playing for Liverpool.

“I’ve been on record and I won’t lie, I’ve said at the time when Liverpool weren’t doing so well and times when a little bit of insecurity crept into me, that maybe the club wanted to make money from me.

“That’s when my head was turned by other clubs around Europe that were interested in me. Maybe the club might be in a better position if they got money for me.

“Looking back now, I’ve got no regrets at all. I’m absolutely delighted with how it’s worked out.”
