Roberto Mancini’s future at Manchester City is safe regardless of whether the Eastlands outfit win the Premier League title, according to the club’s owner Sheikh Mansour.

City are three points behind league leaders Manchester United after the Red Devils could only manage a 4-4 draw with Everton on Sunday, and Mancini’s side eased to a 2-0 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It leaves the title race finely balanced with Sir Alex Ferguson’s men set to make the trip across Manchester to face City in the derby next Monday.

If City fail to beat United, their chances of winning England’s top prize look to be almost certainly over, leaving Mancini’s outfit trophy-less despite significant investment last summer.

But City’s Dubai-based owner Mansour, who has spent over £400m on transfer fees since taking over at Eastlands in 2008, has issued his backing for the Italian.

“The difference is three points and we do have a chance,” said Mansour.

“But whatever happens and even if we don’t win I am very happy and satisfied with the players, team and the management.”

Mancini’s side were eight points clear of United at one stage and looked set to end their 35-year wait for a top flight title, but defeats at Everton and Swansea, plus successive draws with Stoke City and Sunderland, derailed their challenge.

However, Mansour is pleased with City’s recent turnaround – they have won their last three games and United’s slip-up at the weekend has handed their neighbours the initiative.

“They have performed very well and have improved in their last few matches,” the City owner added.
