Neymar breaks Robinho’s Santos record, Boca regain top spot
Charlie Reynolds takes a look at another eventful week in South America, including Neymar's goal scoring feats for Santos

Neymar overhauls Robinho’s Santos goal-scoring record
Brazilian star Neymar has enjoyed another good week, scoring a hat-trick in Santos’ 5-0 demolition of Guaratingueta on Thursday, surpassing Robinho’s goal scoring record for the club. The 20-year-old now has 95 goals for Santos, making him the most prolific goal scorer for the club in the past 20 years, and fourth in the standings for the post-Pele era. Neymar may only need a handful of goals to top those standings but he is still a very long way off Pele’s record. The Brazilian icon is credited with 663 goals for the club although that figure rises to an unbelievable 1,033, if friendlies and tour games are included.
Boca regain top spot on weekend of managerial exits
Argentine Primera División champions Boca Juniors emphatically regained their place at the top of the Clausura table with a 3-0 victory over title rivals Estudiantes at the weekend. The game also saw burly Uruguayan striker Santiago Silva end his scoring drought and register his first goal for the club since his January move from Fiorentina. The win moved Boca one point ahead of Newell’s Old Boys and two ahead of Estudiantes, Vélez Sársfield and Arsenal de Sarandí. The weekend was also notable for the resignation of two managers, Leonardo Madelón and Héctor Rivoira of San Lorenzo and Olimpo respectively, who both quit following defeats for their sides. Relegation-fighting San Lorenzo were beaten 2-0 at home by Vélez Sársfield and bottom-of-the-table Olimpo were thrashed 5-2 by Banfield.
Brazil’s coach loses licence
Brazil national coach Mano Menezes has had his driving licence taken away by police after refusing to take a breathalyser test. The 49-year-old, who took charge of the Seleção in 2010 following their disappointing World Cup performance, was pulled over in the southern part of Rio de Janeiro as part of a crackdown on motoring offences. Menezes was handed a fine of around £325 and given seven points on his licence.
Prankster Ganso gives Santos fans a fright
Santos star and Brazil international Ganso worried the club’s fans on Sunday when he announced on Twitter that he would be leaving the club. The 22-year-old, who has often been linked with a move abroad, tweeted: “Today I say goodbye to Santos’ fans with a broken heart,” indicating that the match against Portuguesa would be his last for the club. However, five minutes later he explained that it had all been a ‘hilarious’ April Fools Day joke, presumably to the delight of Santos fans everywhere: “April Fools’ Day! A blessed day to you with a great victory from Santos later today !!!”
Goal of the week: Fellipe Bastos’ stunner for Vasco de Gama
This week’s goal was scored by Fellipe Bastos of Vasco de Gama as they defeated Alianza Lima 2-1 in the Copa Libertadores. Bastos scored both of Vasco’s goals but his second was the winner, an exquisitely struck shot from outside the area, which curled perfectly into the top left corner. ![]()
