QPR are at their best against the top clubs, admits Mark Hughes

Mark Hughes has admitted Queens Park Rangers appear to give an “extra five per cent” against the Premier League’s top clubs, with the Londoners set to make the trip to Old Trafford next Sunday.

The 48-year-old has overseen QPR secure surprise victories over Arsenal and Liverpool in the past fortnight, while Chelsea suffered a 1-0 defeat at Loftus Road back in October.

QPR face Manchester United next weekend ahead of tough trips to the Etihad Stadium and Stamford Bridge – and they must also welcome Tottenham Hotspur to west London.

“It’s not easy to put my finger on that [QPR’s success against the bigger teams],” said Hughes. “I could say that big games take care of themselves.

“What we need to understand is that every game we have now until the end of the season is a big game, irrespective of the opposition.

“Certainly we seem to have that focus and give the five per cent extra that I’m looking for in every game when we play the top clubs.

“We’ve got Manchester United on the horizon [and] that’s possibly a good thing.”

The former Fulham boss also insisted his QPR squad are united in their aim to remain in the top flight but emphasised the importance his players showing impeccable discipline in key fixtures – the Loftus Road outfit have earned six red cards this season.

“We’re all pulling in the right direction and we’re trying to get ourselves out of a situation, to a certain extent, has been of our own making,” added Hughes.

“We haven’t helped ourselves on a number of occasions. Certainly in games where we’ve got people sent off.

“We need to make sure we address that. In the games we’ve got left, we need to make sure first and foremost we compete, and get something out of them because it’s going to go right to the wire.”
