Amir Khan set for Las Vegas showdown with Danny Garcia

Amir Khan has announced he will fight WBC light-welterweight champion Danny Garcia on 14 July in Las Vegas.

The 24-year-old British boxer revealed on his Twitter page on Wednesday morning that he will face the unbeaten American at the Mandalay Bay Resort.

Khan was supposed to be fighting Lamont Peterson in a rematch for the WBA and IBF titles after losing them to the 28-year-old in a highly controversial bout last December.

However, the American failed a drugs test and tested positive for a synthetic testosterone meaning the much anticipated bout had to be cancelled.

When the fight was officially announced, Khan said on his Twitter page: “May the best man win on 14 July. Khan Vs Garcia.”

Garcia poses a major challenge to the Bolton fighter, with the 24-year-old, nicknamed “Swift”, boasting an unbeaten record in 23 fights, including 14 knockouts.

Garcia won the WBC crown from Mexican boxer Erik Morales back in March in an impressive display.

However it is unclear as to what titles will be at stake, with Khan still waiting on a hearing to discover if he will have his WBA and IBF belts returned to him.

Should Khan fail to receive his belts, there will be a serious conflict, as Garcia is due to face a mandatory challenger in the form of London-based Nigerian Ajose Olusegun.

The return of Khan’s belts would, however, mean a unification bout with Garcia would take precedence.

“It’s a great match up with the WBC title on the line,” Kahn told Sky Sports.

“I don’t know about the other two titles. The hearing is in the next two weeks and then the governing bodies will make their decision.

“Hopefully the hearing goes well.”

When asked about Garcia, he added: “He has quite a similar style [to Peterson]. Garcia is a come-forward fighter and he has a good knockout percentage.

“It is going to be me being as the boxer again. I’ll have to be smart, hit, move and try and be one step ahead of him all the time.

“My little bit of experience ahead of him should work in my advantage. He’s never lost before. It’s going to be a good fight.”

Khan returned to England from his training base in Los Angeles following Peterson’s failed test, and he is expected to stay for at least another week before beginning his preparations stateside.

“I’ve taken two weeks off, I’ll probably take another week off but still do strength work,” he said.

“I’ll be ready so when I go back to LA I’ll be ready to work hard again and work with Freddie Roach on a new game plan.”
