Wojciech Szczesny is confident Arsenal will challenge for trophies next season – as long as the Gunners add further reinforcements during the transfer window.

Arsène Wenger has moved early to complete the signing of Lukas Podolski from Cologne and Gunners goalkeeper Szczesny is hoping to see some more faces arrive before the start of the new campaign.

“You want to win trophies,” Szczesny told Arsenal Player. “Yes, we are happy we managed to finish third but when you play for this club you want to win trophies and we didn’t do it this year so it is disappointing.

“But we already have one signing coming in and hopefully with one or a couple more we can challenge for a trophy next season.”

Arsenal pipped London rivals Tottenham Hotspur to third place in the Premier League with victory at West Bromwich on the final day of the season – and Szczesny, 22, believes his side deserve credit for bouncing back from a difficult start to 2011-12.

“[Finishing third] is massive. I said before that I don’t think people believed we could finish third,” he said.

“Although I wouldn’t have taken it before the season, given the circumstances and the start of the season I think we will take it and we are very pleased.”
