What he said – what he meant: Wenger on Van Persie’s future
Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger has been relentlessly quizzed over captain Robin van Persie's future - but what did he really mean?
What he said: “If I was in his situation I would be relaxed. I am relaxed too. First of all when you open your newspapers you see a lot of clubs who want our players but I would just like to say that nobody is at the end of a contract. That means all the decisions are made by the club.”
What he meant: “I’m worried Robin wants to abandon us like Cesc did last summer.”
What he said: “We want Robin to stay because he is convinced that we can play for the championship.”
What he meant: “Robin is convinced we’ve got more chance of playing in the Championship in 2013-14 than challenging for the title next season.”
What he said: “We have bought Lukas Podolski and our next step is to bring Jack Wilshere back and Abou Diaby back. Then, if you look at our squad, I don’t feel we are behind anybody else.”
What he meant: “Lukas Podolski can be an adequate replacement for Robin van Persie until Park Chu-Young starts firing on all cylinders – which will be soon.”
What he said: “[After 3-3 draw with Norwich] Again we are punished because Robin had to score and many times we do not get enough goals from elsewhere.”
What he meant: “How on earth are we going to cope without him next season?”
