Ashley Young can be England’s danger man, says Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard reserved special praise for Ashley Young after the winger’s sixth international goal helped England to a 1-0 win over Norway on Saturday night.

Young linked up effectively with Liverpool pair Andy Carroll and Gerrard, and the 26-year-old was rewarded for an impressive first half with his fourth England goal in as many appearances.

The United midfielder put forward his case to start England’s Euro 2012 opener against France, with Wayne Rooney suspended – and Gerrard believes Young can be a threat for England playing in a role behind the main striker.

“He’s [Ashley Young] is a good player and he’s in good form for England,” Gerrard told the BBC.

“He’s scoring a lot of goals and he’s very dangerous in that role where defender and midfielders don’t know whether to pick him up.

“He finds the space well so we’re really pleased with Ashley’s performance.”

The England captain also hailed his club team-mate Carroll, who put in a tireless performance for Hodgson’s side, particularly in a second half when the visitors struggled to retain possession.

“He [Andy Carroll] put a shift in, he always does,” added Gerrard.

“That’s what you’ve got to understand with Andy – not only does his form good at the moment but he’s putting in a hell of a shift for the team.”

Gerrard, who was named England captain by Hodgson last week, was delighted to help the former Liverpool manager start his reign with a victory.

“For me it’s always nice to lead my country out but what is more important is that I won as captain. You are judged on winning games and it was nice to get off to a winning start,” added Hodgson.

“Not just for me but for everyone. When a new manager comes in there is a bit of pressure on. But it’s a nice win, a clean sheet. There were quite a few positives.”
