Chelsea playing a dangerous game

With Chelsea’s 2-0 loss to Newcastle United on Wednesday night it appears their hopes of Champions League football next year rest on the Champions League final in Munich.

If Tottenham Hotspur or Newcastle win either of their last two matches then Chelsea’s game is up and the European final takes on even more importance – if that was possible.

But their squad selection against the Magpies indicated perhaps Roberto Di Matteo was already looking towards the final as their best chance.

Ryan Bertrand at left-back was an interesting sight, and José Bosingwa at centre-back was equally interesting, and seeing Ashley Cole, Juan Mata and Frank Lampard on the bench against a potential top four side is very odd.

Fernando Torres has been playing well so Didier Drogba’s place on the bench is fair but it would still be a surprise to see the former Liverpool forward start ahead of the Ivory Coast striker on 19 May.

That is to take nothing away from Papiss Cissé – increasingly looking like the season’s best buy at £10m – his wonder goals proved the difference. Or Alan Pardew – who is a contender for manager of the season.

But Chelsea are playing a very dangerous game to put all their eggs into one basket against Bayern and it could end up being a very unhappy end to a positive couple of months for Di Matteo.

Spurs must sign Adebayor if they secure top-four

If Tottenham do qualify for the Champions League the first thing they should do with that extra money is secure Emmanuel Adebayor on a permanent deal at White Hart Lane.

After a fall out with Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini, the Togo striker made his way to White Hart Lane with many wondering if it would ever work out.

One good season with Arsenal was all he really had under his belt, despite running out for Real Madrid as well.

But 16 goals later after his double against Bolton on Wednesday night and it is fair to say that he has proved any doubters wrong.

With pace, trickery and good power in the air, Adebayor is a nightmare to defend against, and Harry Redknapp insists his attitude in the changing room has been a joy to behold as well.

He is the pinnacle of attacks, linking up well with the likes of Rafael van der Vaart, Gareth Bale, Luka Modrić and Aaron Lennon.

And with the inconsistant Jermain Defoe or injury-prone Louis Saha as the only other options right now, getting Adebayor to sign a long-term deal would be a sensible decision by Redknapp.
