Drogba should leave Chelsea on a high

There can surely be no greater feeling in football than lashing home the winning penalty that takes your club to the promised land of European glory.

It will never get better for Didier Drogba, Chelsea’s man of destiny this season, and he should leave the club with his head held high after winning the Champions League crown.

Without wishing to come off all doom and gloom in the aftermath of the best night in the club’s history, the truth is that this is the last big game this Chelsea side will play together and the last big trophy they will win.

They have needed to make changes for a couple of years now and while André Villas-Boas’ transition was poorly handled and far too abrupt, the theory was correct.

Drogba does not need to struggle on for two years at Chelsea, playing less and less games as he and the likes of Frank Lampard and John Terry are phased out.

This is the pinnacle of his career, this Chelsea side have now won every trophy they could have and deserve to remembered in history accordingly. The 34-year-old should bow out on top.

Holt has earned his big move

The initial shock of Grant Holt’s decision to hand in a transfer request at Norwich City has had time to settle and the burly striker’s decision appears a reasonable one.

Having netted 17 goals this season, 15 of which were in the Premier League, Holt has proven himself as a top class striker worthy of a top class salary to match.

His weekly pick up of around £15,000 is unlikely to satisfy the likes of Fernando Torres (six league goals) or Carlos Tevez (four league goals) so why should England’s second highest goal scorer this season settle for it?

More to the point, what chance has he got of making England’s squad playing at a club like Norwich? None.

The only reason John Ruddy has made it to Euro 2012 is because England’s goalkeeping standards – Joe Hart aside – are in their worst state for at least half a century.

Can you blame Holt for wanting to better himself? He’s almost single-handedly dragged the Canaries up through the divisions and at 31 he has to make the most of his final years as a pro.
