Mike Catt believes his job is to instill the confidence in England’s flying backs to take the fight to the Springboks on this summer’s tour to South Africa.

World Cup winner Catt has been appointed England’s attack coach for the tour, charged with expanding the Red Rose’s game after a series of stoic performances during the Six Nations earned Stuart Lancaster’s men’s organisational and defensive qualities some high praise.

But during the Six Nations, England managed seven tries with Ben Foden the only member of the back three to cross the whitewash.

And Catt is relishing the opportunity to let the likes of Foden, Chris Ashton and David Strettle lose on the 2007 world champions.

“[England] defended for their lives in the Six ¬Nations, which showed their commitment to each other and the nation. That’s what you must have in Test rugby,” Catt told the Mirror.

“England proved they have the defence, the culture, the kicking-game and the hunger. But now it’s time to move things forward in the area of attack.

“I’m coming in to tweak a few things in terms of ¬showing what we can do when we have quick ball and the initiative.

“Let’s see what we can achieve when the likes of Ben Foden, Chris Ashton, Manu Tuilagi and David Strettle have possession.

“I want to see what they can really do when we win turnover ball and can cut loose.

“I want to see the mindset that says ‘we are in charge and we are going to cause you problems.’ I want to see that confidence.”
