Rio Ferdinand has been omitted from Roy Hodgson’s England squad for this summer’s European championship but John Terry has been included.

The 33-year-old Manchester United defender’s international career now looks to be over after being left out.

There are call-ups for uncapped duo Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Norwich City goalkeeper John Ruddy.

Liverpool duo Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing have been included in the 23-man squad, while Wayne Rooney has been picked despite a suspension meaning he will miss the first two group games in Poland and Ukraine.

Ruddy, 25, could not hide his delight at being handed his first international call-up after he was told the news on Monday.

“I had a phone call on Monday informing me that I’d been selected,” Ruddy told Sky Sports. “It hasn’t actually sunk in yet. I’m over the moon. It was quite surreal and I can’t wait to get started now.

“It’s been a long old journey but it’s fantastic for me to be able to repay the faith that Paul Lambert put in me by bringing me to Norwich. It just caps off a wonder couple of years at Norwich. It’s really topped it off.”

Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge and Manchester City winger Adam Johnson join Birmingham’s Jack Butland, Everton’s Phil Jagielka and Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson on the standby list.

England Euro 2012 squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart, Robert Green, John Ruddy

Forwards: Andy Carroll, Jermain Defoe, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck.
