Jake Livermore has hailed his Tottenham Hotspur team-mate Scott Parker for helping the young midfielder develop into a “better player” over the past season.

Parker, who was named in Roy Hodgson’s England squad for the European championship in Poland and Ukraine, moved to Spurs from West Ham United in a £5.5m deal on the final day of last summer’s transfer window.

The 31-year-old’s arrival bumped Livermore down the Spurs midfield pecking order, with Tom Huddlestone, Luka Modrić, Sandro and Rafael van der Vaart all competing for a starting spot in Harry Redknapp’s first team.

But Livermore still managed to make 38 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring his first Tottenham goal against Hearts in the Europa League qualifier last August.

And the 22-year-old hailed Parker’s input since moving to White Hart Lane, describing the former Newcastle United captain’s presence as a valuable commodity to Livermore’s development in the Spurs midfield.

“Obviously Scott coming here added competition,” Livermore told Tottenham’s website.

“However, I think it’s made me a better player, staying here, learning from him and playing alongside him.

“He’s taught me all about the timing of closing down, the timing of pressing and when to sit off and get into a shape.

“They’re little things you pick up on, little things that perhaps you can’t put your finger on and explain, but training with him and all the other players as well, day-in day-out, is the best education possible.”
