Jordan Henderson is hoping his strike against Chelsea can act as a catalyst for the Liverpool midfielder, who is desperate to become a more frequent goal scorer for the Reds.

The 21-year-old has made 36 appearances for Liverpool in the Premier League this season but the midfielder has only scored twice since his £20m move from Sunderland to Anfield in June.

The England Under-21 international netted three times for the Black Cats last season, and Henderson insists he is working hard to become a more prolific goal scorer after a rare John Terry mistake helped the midfielder net on Tuesday night in a 4-1 victory over the Blues.

“I don’t know what went through my mind really,” Henderson told Liverpool’s website. “It all happened quite quick.

“I think someone slipped and I went one-on-one with the goalkeeper and just tried to slot it past him.

“Fortunately it went in, so hopefully I can do that on a more regular basis next season.

“It’s always nice to score. Everyone wants to score goals, but it’s not as easy as that and you’ve got to keep working at it – and hopefully I can do that.”

Henderson was part of the Liverpool side that suffered a 2-1 defeat by Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday – and he admits Tuesday night’s result was a timely boost for the Reds after a disappointing league campaign.

“I think it was the best way to sign off from Anfield for this season,” he continued.
“We went into the game wanting to do that and wanting to give the fans a little bit back.

“Although we’ve had some disappointing results at times this season, we’ve had some good performances too
– and that was another.

“Our game plan was to go at them from the first whistle, pressurise high up the pitch and get at them. We managed to do that and we played quite well.”
