Sir Alex Ferguson conceded Manchester City are “red hot favourites” to win the Premier League title on the last day of the season, despite Manchester United’s victory over Swansea on Sunday.

Goals from Paul Scholes and Ashley Young handed the Red Devils a comfortable win at Old Trafford after City triumphed 2-0 at Newcastle to retain their place at the top of the pile with one game left.

And although Ferguson hopes relegation-battling Queens Park Rangers can do his side a favour by causing an upset at the Etihad next week, the United boss admits City now have the title all but sewn up.

“We’ve won the title on three occasions on the last day and we don’t mind doing it again,” Ferguson, whose side travel to Sunderland on the final day of the season, told the BBC.

“They’re red hot favourites and will make sure they win the match, but QPR need a point and they’re fighting for survival. The whole future of the club could be resting on the game and I only wish Sparky [Mark Hughes] was playing.

“Mark knows his job alright. He was sacked by City in a very unethical way and he’ll remember that. Mark Hughes’ teams always fight but QPR players are fighting for survival.

“It’s always our job, the expectation and responsibility of Manchester United players is to win the match. We’ll go there optimistic. It won’t be easy but we’ll have a go.”
